Facing increasing challenges and shortages healthcare organizations need to think about all kinds of ways to extend worker productivity. The increase in demand in the face of a declining supply of workers will need to be met by labor-saving and thought-saving approaches; approaches to help take some of the thinking off the shoulders of the worker. Healthcare can recoup its investments in technology and other innovative practices by driving greater worker productivity.
"It's axiomatic that outsourcing needs to be part of the equation hospitals and other institutions consider," says Dr. Bauer. "It used to be we looked at everything as a 'make vs. buy' decision. Now it's an 'employ vs. outsource' decision." To meet the burgeoning needs piling up at the door of every healthcare institution in America, these institutions will need to look beyond their own four walls for the solution.
There is a lot to consider as potentially "outsourceable." The options run the gamut from Star Trek-like telemedicine where someone can read an X-Ray in India for a patient in Indianapolis or robots performing many diagnostic procedures to the more nitty-gritty of outsourcing administrative functions, specifically in the HR function.
