Focusing on quality proves to be one of Yahoo!'s keys to success: the economies of scale, state-of-the-art technology and personalized service ProBusiness offers help the #1 Internet portal to stay on top.
The Internet portal business ranks as one of the most competitive in the New Economy. A number of companies have tried their hand at it, but only a few have succeeded. Of those, perhaps none is more renowned than Yahoo!."There have been a lot of casualties in that sector, but the companies remaining have proven their worth," says Andrew Stephens, manager of the Artisan Mid-Cap mutual fund. Often as not, he adds, they've done so by focusing on quality-especially in the area of service, both to customers and employees.
Yahoo! demonstrates this kind of commitment to quality in the services it provides both to its customers and to its internal stakeholders. In the area of payroll services, Yahoo! leverages the economies of scale, state-of-the-art technology and personalized service ProBusiness offers. Quality service is particularly important to Diane Simpson, payroll manager at Yahoo!.
"That's an area where ProBusiness really shines," she says. "In my opinion, the people aspect is what sets ProBusiness apart from the other companies in its field. My account manager makes all the difference in the world to me. We work well as a team and she really coordinates service for me at ProBusiness. Everyone has a real team attitude there. Whoever answers the phone at ProBusiness is fully prepared and eager to take care of you."
Simpson explains that the technology solutions ProBusiness provides enable Yahoo! to do a better job of meeting its employees' needs by shifting more control into employees' hands. About 85% of Yahoo! employees opt for direct deposit of their paychecks. Combining this benefit with the View Paychecks feature of ProBusiness' Web-based Employee Services Portal (ESP), Yahoo! employees can choose to go paperless, referencing copies of their paychecks online. View Paychecks facilitates storage of their personal pay records and employees can easily supply the documentation needed to validate employment history and apply for a loan or mortgage themselves, printing from their online record.
"This is a great benefit," Simpson says. "It really makes it more convenient for our employees. They can reference their personal pay records at home, work or on the road when they need to. They can make important financial decisions at home in consultation with their spouse and family. Web access also makes it possible for the employee's spouse to take care of things while the employee is at work. And accurate records, conveniently stored online, make it much easier for our employees and their accountants at tax time too."
"ProBusiness has been there every step of the way," Simpson says. "The company has met our needs on every front, and now, with the Web-enabled technology, the possibilities have just exploded."
Optimizing technology-enabled self-service options, Simpson and her staff also field fewer manual reprint requests and time balance inquiries from employees so her staff can more effectively focus on strategic activities and improve service in other areas. The Web-based tools and process automation ProBusiness provides also play an important role in Yahoo's migration toward a paperless environment, a goal it wants to achieve without sacrificing anything in the way of quality.
"Regarding the paperless paychecks, I get e-mails from employees every day saying this is right on! We've also cut way down on the pieces of paper that go back and forth between human resources and our department," she says. "We're looking for even more progress in that area in the future and believe ProBusiness will help us achieve that goal."
